Connection Window
Introduction
Each traffic stream can be displayed in a separate window that provides detailed information
such as transfer rate, recent throughput history and other real-time information.
Usage
To view the properties of a connection, first locate the stream in the traffic monitor
then double click it. The connection window will be displayed for that particular traffic
stream.
User Interface
The connection window is split into 3 parts:
-
Local Endpoint - Displays the local address and port information
belonging to the traffic stream.
-
Remote Endpoint - Displays the remote address and port information
belonging to the traffic stream.
-
Traffic Statistics - Shows real-time information for the connection
such as transfer rate, throughput history and total amount transferred.
A description of each field is as follows:
-
Local Domain Name - The name of the computer at the local end of the connection.
-
Local IP Address - The IP address of the local endpoint. Available only
for IP-based protocols (IP, ICMP, TCP and UDP).
-
Local Port - The port value used at the local endpoint. Available only
for TCP and UDP protocols.
-
Local MAC Address - The MAC address of the local endpoint. This is the
physical address of the network adapter that is used by the local endpoint of
the connection.
-
Remote Domain Name - The name of the computer at the remote end of
the connection.
-
Remote IP Address - The IP address of the remote endpoint. Available only
for IP-based protocols (IP, ICMP, TCP and UDP).
-
Remote Port - The port value used at the remote endpoint. Available only
for TCP and UDP protocols.
-
Remote MAC Address - The MAC address of the remote endpoint. This is the
physical address of the network adapter that is used by the remote endpoint of
the connection. Note that this value may be overridden by gateway and proxy servers to
be their own address.
-
Protocol - The Layer 3 protocol used by the connection.
-
Direction - The direction of travel for the connection's traffic.
Each traffic stream has a single direction, Upload or Download.
Upload traffic originates from the LAN and travels to the internet, Download traffic
arrives from the internet and is received by a local computer.
-
Transferred - The total amount of data that has been transferred by
the connection (for the specified direction only).
-
Transfer Rate - The current speed of the connection.
-
Average Rate - The average speed of the connection.
-
Monitored Since - The time that monitoring began for the traffic stream.
Note that if a connection remains in a dormant state with no throughput for a long period
of time, this field may be reset when further data is transferred. If that occurs then
the Transferred field only reflects the amount of data transferred since the
new start time.
-
Utilization Graph - Displays the last 30 seconds of activity for the
connection. The height of the graph is set to the line speed for the specified direction.
Upload data is displayed with a blue line, download is in green.
The connection window also contains several buttons:
-
Create Matching Rule - Creates a new rule that is based on the
properties of the stream such as local and remote endpoint, protocol and direction.
After clicking this button the Rule Wizard is displayed with the appropriate fields
automatically filled in.
-
Clear History - Resets the Transferred and
Monitored Since fields for the connection.
-
Help - Displays the help topic for the connection window.
-
Close - Closes the connection window.
